The Poetry Center at Smith College presents

The most prolific Korean living writer, praised by Allen Ginsberg as “a magnificent poet,” Ko Un is a beloved cultural figure who has helped to shape contemporary literature. Ko Un’s remarkable life is reflected in the many lives his literary output embodies—peasant, village boy and student, army conscript, Sôn monk, schoolteacher, depressive, political activist arrested and imprisoned many times, and author of more than one hundred volumes of poetry, fiction, essays, translations, and drama. He is frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

David McCann, Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Literature at Harvard University, will introduce Ko Un and give a short talk on his poetry in the context of Korean literature.

Supported by the Lecture Committee, the Ada Howe Kent Fund, the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures, the Korean American Students of Smith, and the Daesan Foundation.

That’s why we are going to Legacy in the Making: A Conference for Smith Alumnae of Color from April 16-18. The program  will cover issues of women in color in leadership, cultural identity, LGBT identity, professional development, self-care, and national and global issues such as education, politics, and the economy. The whole event starts with a fabulous keynote by Smith Professor Paula J. Giddings speaking on Friday, April 16. On Saturday night, we will have the opportunity to connect with current Smith students of color as well as prospective students of color during a dessert reception at the Alumnae House. The event ends on Sunday morning with a panel on self-care, an issue we all care about very much!

“FUTURE SMITHIES?” showcases girls from the American West who are connected to Smith College through their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers.

Linnea Osterberd is a portrait photographer in Portland, Oregon. Her pictures peek into the inner lives of children, capturing thoughtfulness, wonderment, and joy.

Please join us for a guided tour of resources for club, affinity and special interest group leaders with JoAnne Lyons Wooten ’74, Affinity and Special Interest Committee Chair, and Leslie D. Mark ’83, Regional Club Coordinator Chair. This webinar, designed to equip you with readily accessible tools to execute your leadership responsibilities, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6th at 12pm EDT. We will spend one hour with you reviewing the wealth of helpful resources available on the AASC website and showing you where to find them.

You will need access to a computer to participate and an email address to receive your registration confirmation. On the day of the webinar you will be able to connect to the site to watch and listen. If you do not have speakers on your computer you can listen via phone. You will be able to type in your questions during the webinar to which JoAnne and Leslie will respond, but we also welcome questions emailed in advance to alumclub@smith.edu. This webinar will be recorded and posted online later, so you and other volunteers can watch it any time at your leisure.

“Smith Worldwide: Voices in the Global Conversation”

The show is titled “Future Smithies?” and she is photographing alums’ daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. with the hopes of photographing the girls’ personality characteristics that are often associated with Smithies (determination, humor, thoughtfulness, etc.) Along with the exhibit, a book is in the works. The book is expected to be sold at the Alumnae House and proceeds will go for scholarships.

This exciting two-day event, sponsored by the Alumnae Association of Smith College, puts you face to face with some of the most talented, successful, and innovative women in business. Their personal stories, along with informative panel discussions, will provide a compelling look at the current climate for women in the business community.

A highlight of the program will be a panel discussion on the important topic of business ethics, planned in conjunction with Smith’s philosophy department, ethics program, and the Women and Financial Independence Program.
